Twenty years ago, I sat in a lawn chair outside the home of a man named Ernie. He had died suddenly the day before, and Iānineteen years old, a brand new pastorāwas heartbroken. Ernie had become a mentor and friend. I didnāt know what to say or do. I didnāt even know what Psalm to read.
Thatās when his granddaughter looked at me and said words Iāll never forget:
āYou donāt have to say anything. Youāre here. Thatās what matters.ā
It was one of my earliest and deepest lessons in ministry.
Sometimes the most Christlike thing we can do is simply show up.
We live in a time when advice is everywhere. We have reels and TED Talks, and Google answers. We feel pressure to say something smart, to fix, to solve.
But when someone is grieving, or anxious, or exhaustedāthey donāt need clever words.
They need presence.
They need someone who will sit in silence, ask a question, say a prayer, or simply be there.
Iāve seen it in hospital waiting rooms, funeral homes, church basements, and living rooms.
And just over a week ago, I experienced it againāthis time on the other side. When my father passed away suddenly, what I needed most in the moments after wasnāt a quote or explanation, or even a Bible verse. I needed someone to sit beside me. And they did.
Thatās the heart of the incarnationāGod with us.
And when we show up for others, we reflect that same love.
So donāt underestimate it:
When you bring a casserole.
When you drive two hours for a funeral.
When you knock on a door and sit quietly with a hurting friend.
When you come back week after week to a small group or Sunday service, even when itās hard.
That matters.
It may not trend.
It may not go viral.
But itās Christlike.
And itās powerful.
Grace & Peaceā
